Thin
section of the igneous rock gabbro. The
light colored minerals are plagioclase feldspars. The colored minerals
are olivine and pyroxene. Do you recall Bowen's Reaction Series ?
Thin section of the rock basalt.
Basalt is found in many regions of Nfld. Green Garden in Gros Morne Park,
Bottle Cove near Lark Harbour and Buchans are places where this rock can
be found. Some basalt has vesicles...we saw these in a hand sample. Vesicles
are signs of volcanic gas escaping as the lava cools.
Granite.
This is a common rock in Nfld. It is found all over the island and in Labrador.
A quick look at a geology map of Nfld. shows the areas where granite occurs.
Granite from the Hope Brook Gold Mine.
This sample was taken from drill core,
then cut and polished by the geologist. Granite makes an attractive building
stone. Many buildings in St. John's, Nfld use granite.Geologists name large
bodies of granite based on their location...for example the "Holyrood Granite".
Many
mineral deposits occur with volcanic and plutonic rocks. This sample is
the copper mineral "chalcopyrite", from York Harbour, Nfld.
There are several small deposits of copper
and zinc in the rocks of the York Harbour area. Some interesting gold assays
have been noted by some mining companies.
