How
It Works
Envirothon
has three components to the competition. The first component is the field
testing. There are four standard field tests (forestry,
wildlife, soils &
aquatics). Each year a fifth field test is added
and this year it is wetlands.
The
second component is the written test. Each team is given a test on all
five areas. The test can consists of multiple choice, true/false, short
answer, essay questions and definitions.
The
third component is the oral presentation. Each team is given a problem
that relates to the special topic of that year. The team is given information
prior to the problem, with the problem and with their acquired knowledge
prior to the competition, they have 15 minutes to orally present their
solution to the problem.
The judges determine if the team has answered the questions with the problem,
have given sound scientific rational for their solution and have covered
all the parameters listed with the problem. Judges may also ask team members
questions to confirm their understand of the situation. To get to the oral
presentation, you have to prepare. Here you see the team from Sir John
A. MacDonald High School, Dartmouth preparing their presentation.
